“Ashes to ashes. Encaustics” by Mats Bergquist curated by Elena Dal Molin and Marco De Gemmis

“Each picture must be a prayer” this is a statement that recurs in the measured words of Bergquist, who commits his encaustics on wood, without any figures, to the observers disposed to share the concentration of his slow and silent way of working, the care and complexity of which are in hiding behind the ascetic simplicity of the result. In the entrance-hall of the Museum and in the small room on the ground floor dedicated to the comparison between the ancient world and the contemporary one, the Swedish artist holds a dialogue with the memory of the ancient technique of Greek painters, the monochrome surfaces of Pompeian fresco decorations, the white of marble and the dark bronze patina of Roman statues.

The exhibition will stay open until October 27th, 2016

Free admittance at the opening
